Michelle Obama Hopes to “Move the Ball” on Childhood Obesity
Michelle Obama strikes again on the school lunch front. In a roundtable interview with a number of news organizations yesterday, the first lady pinpointed childhood obesity as the area in which she wants to leave a lasting policy legacy.
“I want to leave something behind that we can say, ‘Because of this time that this person spent here, this thing has changed,’” she told reporters. “And my hope is that that’s going to be in the area of childhood obesity.”
The first lady will speak to a number of mayors about the issue next week, and she will also get involved in the reauthorization of the federal child nutrition programs. She told reporters that she would even consider testifying before Congress.
“I’d be willing to do whatever it would take to further an agenda,” she said. “If it’s helpful, I wouldn’t say no.”
Mrs. Obama has been promoting healthy eating and physical activity since she dug up the White House front lawn and planted her vegetable garden last year. But this signals a more formal and political commitment to tackling childhood obesity. The administration-wide initiative — the first led by Mrs. Obama — will focus more on policy than her harvest parties and appearances on Sesame Street. It’s about time somebody at the White House took this on, and I couldn’t think of a better person than the first lady.
