Delays for the Child Nutrition Reauthorization

The current Child Nutrition Act is slated to expire at the end of the month, but with the economic crisis and health care reform dominating the agenda in Congress, lawmakers have yet to draft a reauthorization bill. According to CQ Politics, it looks like Congress will extend the current legislation to buy some more time.

That means it may be a few months until we see new child nutrition legislation. Lawmakers granted themselves an extension during the last child nutrition reauthorization, which was set to occur in September, 2003. The final bill was signed into law almost a year later, in June of 2004.

According to the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, most of the disagreement in Congress centers around funding. President Obama set aside $1 billion for child nutrition programs in his 2010 budget proposal, but lawmakers will have to make cuts in other areas before allocating those funds, and they’re having trouble figuring out where the money will come from. The NSAC reports that Congress will pass a short-term extension of the Child Nutrition Act and discuss a reauthorization bill in the spring.
