Some White House Chef Action on School Meals

By Deborah Lehmann

White House Assistant Chef Sam Kass, who has spoken out about the state of the National School Lunch Program, will cook up a meal for Congress next week to focus attention on the child nutrition reauthorization.

On May 5, he and a group of high school culinary students will prepare bell peppers stuffed with non-pork chorizo, carrot quesadillas and a refrescante salad as part of an event called Fresh Choices for the Child Nutrition Reauthorization.” Hosted by the Healthy Schools Campaign, the lunch will include a cooking demonstration with Kass and a congressional policy briefing on school meals.

The high schoolers who will join Kass designed the menu themselves as part of the Cooking Up Change Healthy Cooking Contest, which asked Chicago public school culinary students to come up with a menu for school cafeterias. Six students from the Richards Career Academy in Chicago won first place, and part of their prize is cooking with Kass.

For lawmakers who can’t make the lunch, Kass’ meal will be served in the Congressional cafeteria. The Cinco de Mayo meal will also be served in school cafeterias across the country on the same day.
