Great Profile on America’s Soda Lobbyist

The Des Moines Register ran an article last week about the lobbyist for the American Beverage Association, who is using her role as a mother to encourage Congress to limit, but not ban, sugary drinks in schools. Interestingly enough, she also worked on the ad campaign that helped kill Hillary Clinton’s healthcare plan back in the 1990s. Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition at NYU and the author of Food Politics, says in the article that it’s no surprise that the ABA “would hire someone who demonstrably has no interest in public health.” Read the profile here.

    This woman will not be getting any mother of the year awards.
    She’s no different than a tobacco lobbyist.

    “she’s an effective leader for the soft-drink business because she understands a key audience: “moderation moms,” relatively affluent women who want to protect their kids’ health while still letting them have some drinks and sweets.”
