A White House Vegetable Garden!
By Deborah Lehmann —
Excellent news from the White House front lawn! The New York Times reports that Michelle Obama will break ground tomorrow on the White House’s first vegetable garden since Eleanor Roosevelt. The primary goal of the organic garden, which will grow 55 varieties of vegetables, is to educate children about delicious, local produce and healthy eating. “My hope is that through children, they will begin to educate their families and that will, in turn, begin to educate our communities,” Michelle told the Times.
Among the plants: cilantro, hot peppers, arugula, black kale and Thai basil. A group of fifth-graders from a local school will help her dig the garden, but once the seeds are planted she says everyone in the family will have to help weed.
